Yulia Tymoshenko: Yanukovych must be tried in The Hague

Feb 19, 21:48

Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko believes that by now the most suitable demand to the European Union is not to implement sanctions against Viktor Yanukovych, but to try him in The Hague.  She explained her position in a letter that was read aloud at the Maidan today, reports UNIAN Information Agency.

Tymoshenko called for the creation of a delegation consisting of representatives from Maidan to be sent to tomorrow’s meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU member states, which will address the issue of sanctions against Ukrainian officials responsible for the use of force in Ukraine.

She said that even though sanctions against the president should still be pursued, they are already too late because they can no longer stop large-scale terror.

According to Tymoshenko, it is now necessary to demand that the EU examine the case against Yanukovych at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

“One legal way to bring the case against Yanukovych to the International Criminal Court would be through appeals to the court by those countries whose citizens suffered from the aggression of the regime in power at the time that force was used against peaceful civilians at Maidan,” Tymoshenko said.

” In addition, our delegation must request the immediate dispatch to Kyiv of international forensic and medical expertise and investigation into the deaths of peaceful civilians from firearms and other instruments of violence,” she concluded.
