Pro-Russian militants in the Donetsk Oblast are preparing for armed seizure of more than 80 educational institutions in all areas of the city, announced the press service of the Donetsk Oblast city administration, May 10, as reported by Ukrainska Pravda.

According to the press service, militants from the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” are planning to seize the buildings in order to conduct the so-called “people’s referendum.”
The Donetsk Oblast State Administration notes that under current legislation of Ukraine, the seizure of premises, facilities or other properties of businesses, organizations, and institutions is a criminal offense, according to Articles 294-295 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

As previously reported, the militants announced their readiness to hold the “referendum” on the status of the region on May 11.

According to the head of the “election committee” of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” Roman Lyahin, the pro-Russian activists are supported by the local police, and the local authorities are not interfering.

“We have complete understanding with the government, which is not interfering with the referendum. The polls will be located in the schools. This applies to all cities in the Donetsk Oblast,” Lyahin said. He states that separatists have already formed 53 territorial commissions for the “referendum.”
