The Ukrainian soldiers of the 51st Mechanized Brigade who died last night in the Donetsk Oblast during a battle with pro-Russian militants were from the Volyn Oblast, reports Radio Svoboda, May 22.

The permanent base of the battalion is in Volodymyr-Volynsky. The Volyn Oblast has declared two days of mourning for the fallen. Thursday, May 22, during commemorative events in the “Proshchanycia” area in Volyn, participants honored the memory not only of the UPA soldiers who died there but also of members of the Heaven’s Hundred and the fallen soldiers.

In Volyn, activists of Novovolynsk and Volodymyr-Volynsky are raising funds for military armor for the soldiers. On May 22, the Lutsk city council allocated UAH 130,000 for helmets.

According to the Donetsk Oblast State Administration, 16 people died in the clashes near Volnovakha in the Donetsk Oblast. The Oblast Administration has not specified if the dead were security forces or insurgents. Earlier, the acting president of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov stated that 13 Ukrainian law enforcement members were killed in the battle in the Donetsk Oblast early Thursday, May 22.
