The SMM met with local “Maidan” representatives who explained that one of the main activities of the organization was related to lustration and the fight against corruption. In relation to the latter the movement signed a so-called memorandum of understanding with the official authorities (police and prosecutors) of the city in order to provide mutual assistance. Information and complaints had been received from ordinary citizens and so far 10 cases related to human rights violations, such as illegal detention, had been followed by the organizations.

Ministry of Defense to Admit Financial Embezzlement Within the Framework of ATO

Ukraine’s Acting Defense Minister Mykhailo Koval has acknowledged the presence of financial embezzlement in the framework of preparation for the antiterrorist operation [ATO]. He stated this during his report in Parliament, where he was summoned by Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov upon the demand of the All-Ukrainian Union’s Svoboda faction.

In Parliament, the deputies informed Koval that soldiers’ mothers were telling them terrible things. “Children are being fed canned stewed meat with worms in it!” Batkivschyna parliamentary faction deputy Oleksandra Kuzhel said from her seat.

Former Defense Minister and ex-Party of Regions deputy Oleksandr Kuzmuk reported that within the framework of ATO, the military is not being provided with basic necessities: helmets, body armor vests, not to mention the low wages. The right of rotation is being violated; the soldiers called up for duty have been serving for three months now.

In response, Koval admitted that there has been financial embezzlement in preparation for the ATO. _STR6098_1.jpgRegarding military funding, it is received promptly. There are abuses, but we are keeping the situation under control. Yesterday, I was forced to order the removal of certain executive officers who were in charge of the armed forces’ support, and the transfer of their personal files to the public prosecutor’s office,” the Minister reported.

He also noted that there would be no rotation. “I declare that there will be no rotation! We do not have any available people left! We have employed all of our soldiers. They are standing on the borders, so there will be no rotation within the ATO whatsoever.”

Koval also confirmed information provided by the deputies with respect to food supply issues in the army. “Early in the ATO the food service was, in fact, eliminated. The provision of food supplies has been organized and maintained by people who have never done it before.”

In response, Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to prepare a document to double the funding for the army’s food provision, as well as increase military wages. The Speaker promised that all ATO participants would receive combatant status. _STR2862_1.jpg

Minister Koval also assured that all military are receiving that status, regardless of the fact that “the ATO military are included and execute such orders by secret decrees”: “The orders state that they are located on the training grounds, but this is simply a technicality. All of them will be considered combatants.”

Dozens of dead bodies of men killed in Ukraine arrive in the Chechen Republic; residents state that some of them had served in security forces

Thirty-five to 45 Chechens who were killed in Donetsk Oblast during the fighting have been brought home; according to Chechnya residents, many of them had previously served in special forces battalions.

The security structures of the Chechen Republic have refused to comment on this information, writes the newspaper Kavkhazskiy Utel.

One Chechnya resident said, “I have a relative working in the security services. He said that several dozen dead bodies were delivered home from Ukraine; these were our boys who fought on the side of the militia.”

“Most of those who were killed came from the Gudermeskiy, Shalinskiy and Urus-Martanivskiy districts. It is alleged that six dead bodies were delivered to one district and four to another. But this information is purposefully not being spread because of an order issued by our officials. The bodies are being buried in local cemeteries,” he noted. Continue reading

It appears that the “local separatists” have not been doing a good enough job in Donetsk, so the big boys from out of town had to move in and take over control. What more is there to say?

Statement of Concerned Scholars Regarding the Current Predicament of the Crimean Tatars

Statement of Concerned Scholars Regarding the Current Predicament of the Crimean Tatars

Voices of Ukraine

The Crimean Tatars are a nation with a long and rich history going back many centuries. Because of their origins and the significance of their early modern state—the Crimean Khanate, established in the early fifteenth century—their history and culture has many connections with the histories and cultures of Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and the Middle East. We, the undersigned, are scholars whose work relates to these regions. We would like to express our concern at the situation of the Crimean Tatars since the Russian Federation’s intervention into and illegal annexation of Crimea.

1) Unlike Russians and Ukrainians, the Crimean Tatars have no homeland other than Crimea. Ever since the Crimean Khanate was invaded and abolished by Russia in 1783, in violation of the Treaty of Kuchuk Kajnardja of 1774 in which Russia pledged to respect the khanate’s independence, the Crimean Tatars have been the object of systematic and wholesale oppression. They…

A final warning for us and for Ukraine

What is happening now in the Donbas is a final warning for Ukraine. History leaves us no choice. Either we create a new political reality, or in a couple of years we will be chasing “Babays” [bearded separatists] around Kyiv. We cannot sit this out.

What is happening now in the Donbas is a final warning for Ukraine. We are witnessing with our own eyes the collapse of the state, which happened because of twenty years of our neglect towards it.

An army that does not want to fight and surrenders its weapons, tanks that do not run, SBU and police who side with the separatists, border guards who freely let through enemies of the state, traitor politicians who robbed our budget with impunity for many years, and who now use this stolen money to finance war against…
