Ukraine is preparing for a complete gas shutoff on Monday, June 16, as well as the interruption of gas transit to Europe. The announcement was made by the head of Naftogaz of Ukraine Andriy Kobolyev, reports Espreso TV, June 14.
“We’re preparing for the worst-case scenario, a full zero,” Kobolyev stated on TV channel 24.
On Friday, June 13, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk instructed the appropriate ministries, the leadership of Naftogaz of Ukraine, and the oblast state authorities to switch to the plan of operation to be implemented in case Russia suspends gas delivery on Monday, the government press service stated, June 13, as reported by Espreso TV.
“The leadership of Naftogaz of Ukraine and the Minister of Justice of Ukraine have been instructed to complete preparations for protecting the interests of Ukraine in the relationship between Naftogaz of Ukraine and OJSC Gazprom in the Stockholm Court of Arbitration,” the press service stated.
Yatsenyuk also appealed to the leadership of Ukraine’s National Electricity Regulatory Commission to establish cost-based tariffs for the transport of Russian gas through Ukraine.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Energy and Mines have been commissioned to inform the member states of the European Union and the United States of the deliberate disruption by the Russian Federation of negotiations on the delivery of gas between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom and the rejection of constructive suggestions proposed by the Ukrainian side, which correspond to the position of the European Commission,” the government press service stated.
As previously reported, on Thursday, June 12, the CEO of Gazprom, Oleksiy Miller, declared that if Gazprom does not receive US $1.9 billion from Naftogaz of Ukraine by 10:00, June 16, gas to Ukraine will be supplied only on a prepayment basis.
